Frequently asked questions

How does the climate affect different fence materials?
When choosing a fence, you should take into account the climate of the area where you live. For example, in colder climates, consider the frost line and use concrete anchors placed deep enough to support the fence posts. For warmer and wetter climates, you should stay away from most woods because they are susceptible to water damage. Vinyl is the best choice for more temperate regions as it can hold up in damp weather, but it can be damaged by extreme heat. If you live in an area that experiences frequent frigid temperatures, then you may want to stick with more durable materials. Metal, bamboo and specific species of wood are the most resilient materials in colder climates.

What kind of fence is the best for pools?
Different types of pool fence materials exist on the market, such as chain link, wrought iron, and mesh. Mesh fences are particularly suitable for pools because of their safety and aesthetic qualities. The flexible mesh fabric is climb resistant, which helps prevent young children from accessing the pool. The material is also transparent so it won’t obstruct the aesthetics of your pool, and helps with the safety factor allowing you a clear view of your pool area.

Why do I need a pool fence?
South African law requires that an owner of any site which contains a swimming pool must ensure that access to such swimming pool is controlled. If your pool is accessible from the street or to the public, the height of your pool fence needs to be 1,2m high. If however, your property is enclosed with a wall or fence of 1,2m or higher, and your gate to the road access is locked, then the height of your pool fence can be 1m. The regulations also provide that any owner who fails to comply with this requirement shall be guilty of an offence. Additionally, a home owner can also be sued for negligence should someone drown in their swimming pool, depending on whether negligence was present.
