I purchased a property in Johannesburg, which has since been transferred into my name. Before the purchase and transfer, I was not informed that there was no lawful water meter serving the property or that the water connection may be illegal. I was only told that the water pressure was low and that I should contact Johannesburg Water. After contacting Johannesburg Water, their technician inspected the property and advised that there is no meter in the meter box and that the water supply is illegally connected. I was advised that I must apply for a new 20 mm water meter to regularise the supply, at an estimated cost of approximately R23,00 This issue appears to have existed before transfer and was not disclosed to me. The transferring attorneys have written to the sellers and the bank, but the sellers are not responding to those emails or messages from an agent I would like legal advice on my rights, who should be responsible for the cost of correcting this issue, and what action can be taken to obtain an urgent resolution and recover any costs I may incur.
