• How do I know if an electrical contractor is registered?

  Every ECA (Electrical COntractors Association) member is a registered electrician. If he is not a member of the ECA, it is best to ask to see his/her registration certificate from the Department of Labour.

• How long is the electrical certificate of compliance valid for in South Africa?

  The electrical certificate of compliance is valid for maximum of 2 years.

• Who can issue electrical certificate of compliance?

  Only a registered person, employed by a registered electrical contractor may issue a certificate of compliance after they have inspected and tested the electrical installation and found it to be reasonably safe.

• Do I need electrical certificate of compliance if I’m only doing alterations to my house?

  If there are any alterations to the electrical wiring you will need a new certificate of compliance.

• How long does it take for electrical contractor to inspect my wiring in order to issue certificate of compliance?

  The inspections and safety tests usually take between 2 and 3 hours.
