The cost of a divorce in South Africa can vary widely depending on whether it's contested or uncontested. An uncontested divorce might cost between R7,500 to R15,000, excluding VAT and disbursements. Costs for a contested divorce can be significantly higher, as they depend on the complexity of the case and the amount of litigation required.
When selecting a divorce lawyer, consider their expertise in family law, their experience with similar cases, and their approach to handling divorce proceedings. It's also important to assess their communication style, responsiveness, and the feedback from their previous clients to ensure they align with your needs and expectations.
An uncontested divorce can be finalized within six to twelve weeks, while the duration of a contested divorce is harder to predict and depends on the complexity of the issues and the court's schedule.
Whether you can claim a portion of your spouse's pension fund depends on your marital regime. Spouses married in community of property, or out of community with accrual, may have a claim to each other's pension, unless excluded by an antenuptial contract. Legal advice is crucial here to understand how your specific marital regime affects such claims.
In divorce cases, a family lawyer can help manage the legal proceedings, provide expert advice on division of assets, child custody, and spousal support, and ensure that the client's rights are protected throughout the process. They can also facilitate negotiations and settlements to try to resolve the matter amicably before reaching court.

Hello.. I need help. My child was knocked by a car. And the driver was drunk. They even took her from the scene to the clinic without informing the police first. I went to the police station to check if the case was opened. No one there is willing to tell me anything. They even refused to do a breathalyzer test. On him. They took him from the clinic straight to his home. I am still at the station. They are even refusing me to talk to the station commander. What steps should I take. The child is at klerksdorp hospital now. The driver was also under influence of alcohol.
